The British Balloon And Airship Club
In ballooning, every flight is a magical mystery tour and even the pilot never knows where he is going to land. If you have ever wondered what it is like to fly high above the ground, almost touching the clouds, here is your opportunity. Just remember a few things to do first! Always check that the balloon operator is authorised by the Civil Aviation Authority. All such companies will employ experienced (licensed) pilots and the balloons will be well insured for passenger liability. Passengers are often encouraged to get involved in the preparation of the balloon for flight and in packing it away afterwards. To celebrate your first experience in lighter-then- air travel you will be served champagne after the flight. Flights normally tack place shortly after dawn and one or two hours before sunset as this is when the air is calmest. Balloons are very weather dependent and can be grounded by strong winds, rain and poor visibility. A flight postponed will usually be rescheduled for another day. The direction a balloon travels in is totally dependent on the wind direction and it is highly unlikely that you land back at your take-of site. However, once you have landed, you will be picked up and returned back to the launch site by road. It will not be appreciably colder whilst flying than it is on the ground; however, you are advised to dress in layers and wear non-synthetic clothes. In the summer a cap and a long sleeved light weight cotton top will protect head and arms from the heat. Good footwear is recommended (walking boots or Wellingtons) especially in the mornings and autumn through to spring; the grass at the launch site will almost certainly be wet in the mornings. With these thoughts in mind, de-stress in one of the most tranquil environments, and enjoy a feeling of calm.
